Detail Itinerary

Arrive in Semera, the capital of the Afar region, and set off toward the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and most extreme places on Earth. After a scenic drive, reach Hamed Ela, the gateway to this otherworldly region. On the way, you’ll pass through salt flats, active volcanic craters, and colorful geothermal formations, which create a surreal and alien landscape.

Upon arrival at Hamed Ela, check into your camp and enjoy the sunset over the stark desert. The changing colors of the landscape at dusk provide a magical view that you won’t soon forget.

Start your day early and head to Dallol, one of the hottest places on Earth. Here, you will see a combination of salt formations, sulfuric hot springs, and vibrant pools of color created by geothermal activity. The area’s extreme heat and alien landscape will make you feel like you’ve stepped onto another planet.

In the afternoon, make your way to Erta Ale Volcano, one of the only continuously active volcanoes in the world. Hike to the summit to witness the spectacular views of the glowing lava lake, a truly awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. Camp nearby and enjoy the rumbling sounds of the volcano as you spend the night under the stars.

After breakfast, travel back to Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, and prepare for the journey into the Gheralta Mountains. On the way, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the dramatic mountain landscape. After checking into your hotel, head out to explore the Gheralta Churches.

Begin your exploration with a visit to Mariam Korkur, a rock-hewn church that is carved high into the cliffs of the Gheralta range. This church is less visited than others, which adds to its mystical appeal. The church’s location offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, making it a peaceful and awe-inspiring site. The climb to the church requires some effort, but the reward is the serene and almost magical experience of standing in one of Ethiopia’s most remote and sacred sites.

Today, embark on a challenging but rewarding hike to the Abune Yemata Guh church, one of the most iconic of the Gheralta Churches. Perched high atop a cliff, this 5th-century church is famous for its ancient frescoes and its daring location. Reaching the church requires a steep ascent with the aid of ropes, making it a thrilling experience for adventurous travelers.

Once inside, you’ll be able to admire some of the finest and most well-preserved frescoes in Ethiopian history. These paintings depict biblical scenes and offer a glimpse into the rich spiritual traditions of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys from the top of the cliff are nothing short of spectacular.

In the morning, journey from Mekelle to Axum, the ancient heart of Ethiopian civilization and the home of the legendary Axumite Kingdom. Upon arrival, take time to explore some of the city’s most important historical sites.

Visit Stelae Park, where you can see the famous Axum Obelisks, towering monuments that once marked the tombs of ancient kings. Explore the Tombs of the Kings, a fascinating archaeological site, and see the Palace of the Queen of Sheba, believed to be the residence of the legendary q

On your final day, visit the Church of St. Mary of Zion, one of the most sacred churches in Ethiopia. It is believed to house the Ark of the Covenant, a priceless religious relic said to be brought to Ethiopia by Menelik I, the son of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon.

Before your departure, stroll through the local markets, enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Axum, and savor your last moments in this historic city. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for additional sightseeing or relaxation before heading to the airport.
