  • Spot Unique Wildlife: Look out for endemic species such as Gelada baboons, banded barbet, Abyssinian woodpecker, Rüppell’s black chat, and white-winged cliff chat.

  • Experience Local Legends: Visit a cave where Gelada baboons take shelter at night and hear stories tied to this remarkable landscape.

  • Founded by Abuna Tekle Haymanot in 1284, Debre Libanos Monastery was once the spiritual heart of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church for nearly 500 years. Abuna Tekle Haymanot, known for his unwavering faith and devotion, is often depicted with six wings and standing on one leg—a reference to his legendary years-long prayers on a single leg, leading to the loss of the other.

Set on a serene terrace overlooking a tributary of the blue nile, the monastery offers a tranquil retreat among woodland and streams. However, its history is also marked by tragedy. In 1937, during the Italian occupation, the site witnessed one of the darkest massacres, with hundreds of monks, deacons, and laypeople killed.

Today, none of the original buildings remain, but two churches have been rebuilt:

    • The Church of Abuna Tekle Haymanot (built in 1961 by Emperor Haile Selassie) houses his tomb.

    • The Church of the Cross, which is said to contain a fragment of the True Cross.

Pilgrims visit the monastery to honor the saint and seek blessings from holy water near the spot where Saint Tekle Haymanot is believed to have prayed.

  • The origins of the so-called Portuguese Bridge are debated—some attribute its construction to Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, while others believe it was built in the 19th century by Ras Darge, Emperor Menelik II’s uncle.

Cross the bridge and take a short walk along the riverbank to a stunning viewpoint. From here, you’ll witness the majestic Gur River waterfall, which cascades 600 meters during the rainy season (July–September). The surrounding cliffs and valleys are home to Gelada baboons and other wildlife unique to Ethiopia.

Descending into the jema gorge is like stepping into a natural masterpiece. This awe-inspiring canyon, often compared to the Grand Canyon, is considered Africa’s largest canyon. The journey offers unparalleled vistas, making it a photographer’s dream and a nature lover’s paradise.

This trip blends Ethiopia’s spiritual heritage with its unparalleled natural beauty, creating a memorable experience for every traveler. Whether you’re admiring breathtaking landscapes, connecting with Ethiopia’s rich history, or seeking out its unique wildlife, this journey will leave you inspired
